The current narrative from researchers connected to the fraudulent Alfa allegations is that after the announcement of the DNC hack in June 2016 they became curious whether the Russians were also messing with the Trump campaign, they looked at DNS activity and stumbled on a secret encrypted communications channel between Trump and Putin.

That narrative was always important because the data just showed some DNS lookups (later debunked as fraud) between servers between Alfa Bank, Spectrum Health, and the non-Trump controlled marketing server at Listrak. Why would technical researchers offer a non-technical narrative two steps beyond what the data would’ve shown (even if the DNS activity were legit)?
