Rodney Joffe's Twitter

Threats against me started about a year ago. They got quite a bit worse about 6 months ago. Most of it is typical threats of lawsuits, some threats are vague, others have been a little alarming.

A few weeks ago I was taking a look through some of these threats and I found a pretty interesting Twitter profile.

@rahalstraight caught my eye immediately upon seeing the location of George Mason, Virginia. For one thing, I know that Rodney Joffe lives in that vicinity.

Next, there are references to being a “geek” and a car enthusiast, both of which match with what I know of Joffe.

Next, I noticed emptywheel and Chris Krebs were followers of this account (which has no tweets, only replies), which is something that tracks with what I know about Joffe as well. He’s always been quite close to Krebs.

I then noticed the account is following Richard Bejtlich, Chris Krebs, Matt Blaze, Brian Krebs, TeaPain, and Randy Bush - along with a number of intelligence agency and left-wing journalist accounts. Additionally, he follows Fairfax County Police, again, that’s where Joffe lives.

As I said, the account has no tweets, only replies. In those replies, he clearly evidences a personal interest in matters concerning Rodney Joffe and the Alfa Bank allegations.

Calling a Judge a hooker is probably ill-advised.

Reference to Cricket Liu who runs in the same circles as Joffe.

Pretty notable to pull out Neustar’s Terms of Use, most people would not think to do that unless they worked there.

It goes on from there. There’s also a comment from which we can infer @rahalstraight knows the subpoenaed cyber researchers in the Alfa civil case. Elsewhere, he references a relationship to the late Dan Kaminsky, something we would expect from Joffe.

Lastly, the use of the :-) smiley face. Fifteen years ago that was pretty common. In the era of emoji’s people don’t use it as much. It’s certainly an idiosyncrasy of Joffe’s, and we see that in numerous Tweets from this user.

Amazing to see him actively discussing the case while being investigated, but this identification wasn’t all that difficult. I would assign a 90% confidence level that @rahalstraight is Rodney Joffe.
