Politico is out with a new story on the Vatican (Thanks Daniel for giving us the heads up), and a former accountant appointed in 2015 named Libero Milone. Milone, a former auditor from Deloitte hired by the Vatican, alleges that the payroll agency was able to alter names and account numbers on transactions after they were made, and that this enabled the Vatican to wire funds to private clients without revealing who they were.
Milone suggests he was pushed out after identifying wrongdoing by Cardinal Becciu, someone original Sleuth News followers may recognize. Vatican officials suggest Milone was let go because he was a spy.
Milone gave a press conference recently and later confirmed the claims on the record for Politico.
Here is the tie in, as we briefly covered in 2022, Neustar’s Melbourne office, acquired only in 2015, received 4 transfers totaling $2 million between 2016 and 2017 from the Holy See that are unaccounted for by regular business activities.
Cardinal Becciu, once prosecuted for money laundering, only alleged that the transfers related to “classified” projects. Becciu was later convicted of fraud and embezzlement.
In 2022, Sleuth News launched a fight in Australia for records contained by AUSTRAC—Australia’s financial intelligence agency—but we were ultimately unsuccessful in removing redactions, even after an appeal. We were told Neustar’s “business interests” superseded our right to know.
We suspect the US Intelligence community has a role in this and that some part of it will relate to Russiagate.
Keep in mind Rodney Joffe alleged that Neustar management, including Lisa Hook, was completely aware and supportive of his work on various Russiagate projects during 2016 and 2017. Hat tip Charlie Savage for getting that complaint to the public.
Still a great deal of investigating to do, but here’s a classic:
Follow the money.
