In Santos Commutation, Trump Fails

This week we saw an indictment of John Bolton, and as far as the high profile recent indictments go, this one seems strong. Bolton has some significant problems ahead, and what the indictment outlines is damning.

The recent indictments of James Comey and Letitia James are hard to see as anything but smear campaigns. Make no mistake, Comey deserves to be indicted, he deserves criminal charges.

But as the great William Munny said, “Deserve’s got nothing to do with it.”

What Comey was charged with doesn’t strike at the core of the Russiagate saga, it’s at best a sideshow, because our government has proven itself incapable of doing a proper investigation.

Tonight, Trump commuted the sentence of George Santos. A former Congressman, he was finally sentenced in April of this year to 87 months in prison. He’d pled guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, and admitted committing other crimes. He deserved every bit of the sentence based on the laundry list of crimes he was accused of.

In doing this, Trump has made it clear he isn’t interested in one standard of justice, and has given fuel to the politicization argument associated with the indictments of his political opponents.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is struggling mightily to deliver any transparency or accountability for long-standing issues.

We have a story coming over the weekend that will highlight one individual still employed by the DOJ who is at the center of a series of scandals, which may help illustrate the continuing struggles of the new administration.
